Credit may appropriately be given to Addison as the founder of endocrinology, since he was the first to show that a diseased condition could result from a defective ductless gland. However, he is most remembered for his discovery of two diseases, both of which bear his name, "Addison's Anaemia," and "Addison's Disease." Click here to Order

This edition is distinguished in several ways. First, it is an exact facsimile - the first ever done - of this very rare and now very expensive first English edition of 1816, which is particularly enhanced by the color engravings of the famous English mezzotint portraitist Charles Turner. Secondly, the English translation of the foreword to the German edition of Carpue's book by his contemporary, Carl F. Von Graefe, is also included. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this edition includes a new biography and evaluation of Carpue especially prepared for this edition by the leading modern authority in the history of plastic surgery, Frank McDowell. Easty was a private marine, with very little education. By no means a model soldier, but one who drinks and disobeys with the rest of them, and receives his share of floggings. With unpracticed hand, he scrawls and splashes his way across the page, noting down the trivia and tragedy of day-to-day existence in the new settlement. The printed text conforms as closely as possible to the original manuscript, preserving the author's peculiarities of spelling and punctuation, and the corrections and alterations which he made. There is little history in the sense of chronological narrative in Olaus Magnus's Historia. It is rightly regarded as an ethnographic essay on an encyclopaedic scale, touching on a vast variety of topics, snowflakes and sea-serpents, elks and artillery, sables and saltpeter, watermills and werewolves. Much of it was culled from ancient authorities, it is a matter of patriotic pride to identify the Swedes as the only legitimate descendants of the Goths, but much of it was derived from the author's personal observations, especially those made on his early travels in North Sweden. This facsimile prepared from the first edition of 1934. The argument over the origin of syphilis -- did Columbus bring it from the new World, or did his sailors take an affliction previously unrecognized in Europe to the natives of the newly discovered lands? -- has yet to be settled. What is indisputable is that the most influential early book on the "French disease" (to use one of its many sobriquets) was written by Girolamo Fracastoro. Click here to Order

At first light on the morning of 1st January 1945, over 800 Luftwaffe fighters took off from their bases in Germany to attack Allied airfields in Holland, Belgium and France. Some of these surprise attacks proved successful, some were hardly noticed, while others were disastrous for the attackers. Basing his account on information from both Wing and Squadron diaries, and with many first-hand accounts from the men who were there, Norman Franks paints a definitive picture of that winter morning and the rest of the day. SERVETUS, MICHAEL; O'MALLEY, CHARLES DONALD (Translator); FULTON, JOHN F; (Commentary by).

Christianismi Restitutio and Other Writings.
Special Limited Facsimile Edition; Med. 8vo; pp.[iv], [ii], 208, [ii], 98, 1); marbled endpapers, text with several b/w. illustrations, bound in full brown leather, raised bands, title lettered in gilt on spine, gilt stamped decoration to spine and boards, all edges gilt, original silk page marker, fine copy.
Birmingham, Alabama; The Classics of Medicine Library / Gryphon Editions Ltd.; 1989.
This facsimile prepared from the first American edition of 1953. Michael Servetus, medical practitioner, theologian, and unequivocally, one of the most extraordinary intellects of the early Reformation. This work first published in 1553 was banned by both civil and church authorities for its "heretical" content, the Christianism Restitutio would later reveal the first known passage concerning the pulmonary or "lesser" circulation. Servetus forthrightly stated that blood did not flow from right side of the heart to the left via the septum; rather it passed through the lungs for oxygenation. His observation that the "vital spirit is then transfused from the left ventricle of the heart into the arteries of the whole body" indicates that Servetus was on the verge of understanding the total nature of circulation some seventy-five years before the publication of De Motu Cordis. The publication of Christianismi Restitutio sealed Servetus's fate, and he was burned to death at the stake for his "heresy" in 1553. Click here to Order

The second volume introduces the reader to the multifaced colourful and occasionally bizarre world of Harley fandom - the world of "true bikers" who identify themselves with their Harleys radically and without compromise.
